Back to School Safety Tips for Texas Drivers

By The Law Office of WT Johnson on September 12, 2012

Schools across Texas are back in session, so drivers will need to look out for young pedestrians around school zones. According to The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 55 million children across the United States are back at school and 13 percent of them walk or ride their bikes to school.

In order to keep children safe, here are tips for what you can do to avoid a collision in a school zone.

First of all, slow down and obey school zone speed limits. AAA reports that pedestrians struck by a car traveling at 25 mph are two-thirds less likely to suffer fatal injuries than someone struck at 35 mph.

Also, children commonly attempt to cross the road at unexpected times and locations. They can emerge from between parked cars or from the middle of the street where there is no crosswalk. If you are attentive and focused, you have a greater chance of avoiding a collision. At crosswalks and intersections, you can prevent pedestrian accidents by coming to a complete stop.

It is also important to use extreme caution when reversing. Look for children in your blind spot before slowly backing up, and make sure passengers are not blocking your view.
