Drunk driving is suspected in last night’s devastating accident in Dallas, which killed two adults and critically injured an 8-year-old girl. Witnesses say a driver sped through a red light and plowed into 3 vehicles. One of the vehicles slammed into a utility pole, instantly killing two adults inside and ejecting the girl onto the street. It is unknown if the two adults were the girl’s parents. The driver who caused the accident attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by a witness and held until police arrived. Police arrested the driver and charged him with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault. Witnesses at the crash site detected a strong smell of alcohol coming from the driver.
An adult in Texas over the age of 21 is considered Driving While Intoxicated when a blood alcohol content of .08 or greater is present. A person of 120 pounds can easily become intoxicated after just 2 drinks. A person of 180 pounds can become intoxicated after 3 or 4 drinks. Don’t be fooled by beer or wine: a drink can be a 5-ounce glass of wine, a single beer or a shot of liquor — each contains a similar amount of alcohol.
Unknown Cost of Drunk Driving
Though a dollar amount is difficult to determine, an accident like last night’s might include:
- Damage to 4 vehicles
- Damage to city property
- Hospital bills and medical expenses for the critically injured
- Medical expenses for those with non-critical injuries
- Physical rehabilitation for the injured
- Funeral expenses
- Penalties and fines to the driver
- Jail time for the driver
- Death of loved ones (possibly parents)
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Psychological counseling
There is no dollar sign for the grief and trauma of a devastating accident.
