How to Determine What Gave You Food PoisoningEven though you may think you are safe from food poisoning since you live in America, there are still 48 million cases of foodborne illness annually, which means 1 in 6 Americans get food poisoning each year. Food poisoning leads to an estimated 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths each year.

Food poisoning can be caused by anything you ate within the last eight hours to two weeks. To help you determine what might have caused your food poisoning, here are some common causes, according to the Federal Drug Administration:

    • Food Sources: Eggs, poultry, meat, unpasteurized milk or juice, cheese, contaminated raw fruits and vegetables

  • Botulism

    • Onset after eating: 12-72 hours

    • Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, blurred vision, double vision, difficulty in swallowing, muscle weakness. Can result in respiratory failure and death

    • Duration: Variable

    • Food Sources: Improperly canned foods, especially home-canned vegetables, fermented fish,  baked potatoes in aluminum foil

  • Perfringens food poisoning

    • Onset after eating: 8–16 hours
